Decorative Leaf Cards

Here’s an easy autumn project. Make your own greeting cards, note cards, and postcards using leaves to add a special decorative touch. Isn’t there someone who would love to get a festive, handmade greeting from you?

Time:
  1. 60 minutes or more

Age Group:
  1. 5 - 8

What you'll need:
  • Leaves

  • Bounty® paper towels

  • Newspaper

  • Card stock (various sizes, depending on what kind of card you want to make)

  • Rubber cement

  • Clear Con-Tact® paper

  • Markers or pens to write messages on your card(s)

Directions:
  1. Gather your leaves. Think about the card(s) you want to design, and choose an assortment of leaves in different colours, shapes, and sizes.

  2. Soak the leaves in warm water and blot them dry with Bounty paper towels. Place the leaves between sheets of newspaper, and place heavy books on top of them to flatten. (Use phone books, dictionaries, etc.) Let your leaves dry for about a week.

  3. While your leaves are drying, decide what size card(s) you’re going to make, and make sure you have the card supply you need: 21 cm x 27 cm to fold into a 16 cm x 21 cm greeting card, a 8 cm x 12 cm or 10 cm x 15 cm postcard, or perhaps a square note card. Will you need an envelope in which to mail your card?

  4. When you are ready to begin, gather your card supply and other materials. Arrange your leaves in a design you like, and write any message or sentiment on that side. Cement the leaves to the card with rubber cement and let them dry for a day.

  5. Cover with Con-Tact paper to protect your design.

  6. Jot your greeting on the inside or reverse side of the card, and send it off to someone special!
