Potato-Print Wrapping Paper & Gift Tags

Here’s a craft the whole family can have fun doing, from little ones to teens. Save time (and potential trips to the ER!) by using small cookie cutters to punch out shapes in the potatoes. Then let your creativity loose! This is an easy, fun, and inexpensive way to really make your next gift-giving occasion a special one.

Time:
  1. 30 to 60 minutes

Age Group:
  1. 5 - 8

What you'll need:
  • Potatoes

  • Tissue paper, butcher paper, or shopping bags

  • Card supply for the gift tags

  • Acrylic paint or ink

  • Shallow containers to hold paint

  • Paper plates to hold ink

  • Container of water

  • Felt-tip pen

  • Small cookie-cutters in various shapes (Adult supervision required!)

  • Sponges or stamps (optional)

  • Ribbon, yarn, or other embellishments (optional)

  • Scissors

  • BountyŽ paper towels

Directions:
  1. Cut potato in half. Use the felt—tip pen to draw a shape on each half of the potato (or press a small cookie—cutter shape into each half of the potato).

  2. With the help of an adult, cut away the area around the shape you’ve drawn so your potato is now a stamp.

  3. If you’re using paint, pour your paints into the containers, dip your potato stamp into one colour of paint, and press the potato stamp down firmly on your tissue, butcher, or shopping-bag paper. Add some variety to your designs with sponges or store-bought stamps in different sizes and shapes, or clean your potato stamps with water and dry them with a paper towel before switching to a new colour.

  4. If you’re using ink, put a few drops on a paper towel on a paper plate. Dab the potato stamp into your "stamp pad," and decorate as described above.

  5. For the gift tags, trim white or coloured paper to the size you want. Follow the same directions above for stamping, and/or decorate tags with stickers, glitter, or other embellishments. If you want to attach the tag with a ribbon or piece of yarn, make a small slit about 1 cm from the top of the card and slide the ribbon/yarn through the slit.

  6. Clean up with soap, water, and paper towels.
